ST. LOUIS — Front Row Produce of St. Louis is recalling 10 ounce pint and 10 pound bulk grape tomatoes supplied by Rio Queen Citrus based in Mission, Texas, due to possible salmonella contamination. The recalled products were distributed throughout Missouri and Illinois. According to a press release, no illnesses have been reported. Production has been temporarily suspended while the FDA and the company attempt to locate the source.

Researchers from the University of Arizona swabbed shopping cart handles in four states looking for bacterial contamination. Of the 85 carts examined, 72 percent turned out to have a marker for fecal bacteria.

The researchers took a closer look at the samples from 36 carts and discovered Escherichia coli, more commonly known as E. coli, on 50 percent of them — along with a host of other types of bacteria.

The study’s results may explain earlier research that found that kids who rode in shopping carts were more likely than others to develop infections caused by bacteria such as salmonella and campylobacter.
 
More than 22,000 pounds of ready-to-eat fresh salad products have been recalled after Salmonella tests at a Northern California farm came back positive. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.

The death toll in a string of food poisoning cases believed to be caused by consuming raw meat at a "yakiniku" barbecue restaurant chain has risen to four after a 70-year-old woman died Thursday.

More than 30 people have been hospitalized in the food poisoning outbreak in Toyama and Kanagawa prefectures, with about 20 of them in serious condition. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli bacteria including the O-111 and O-157 strains have been detected in many of the cases.
 
cucumbers grown in Spain are said to be the origin of the contamination epidemic triggered by EHEC bacteria that swept across Germany. Bacteria which has already caused between three and five deaths in the past few days.
